When I was a kid, I used to look forwards to Sunday all week (well I still do!): no school, no homework, sleep in late and TV allowance. If you are Indian, please raise your hand!

Raise both your hands, if you felt completely cheated and devastated when Doordarshan replaced the Sunday evening movie with krishi darshan (farmer’s world). Message me and we will share the trauma over a cup of tea.

However, of all the good things that Sunday brought in my childhood, it was my mom’s cooking which was the best.

My mom would cook our favourite foods on Sunday and one of them was French toast or ‘meethi bread’ as we called it. We weren’t allowed to eat bread on any other days (not good for health, all that white flour!) but exception was made for Sundays.

This recipe for making french toast is super easy and yumlicous.

And please start the calorie and nutrition counter on the negative end of the scale!

Ingredients

  • 8 small slices white bread you can use brown bread (whole wheat) too but I prefer white bread
  • 2 eggs medium size
  • 1/4 cup milk whole or semi skimmed i.e. slighly reduced fat. Try not to use zero fat milk
  • 4-6 tbsp sugar any sugar will work
  • Oil for frying I prefer using ghee but you can use any oil you use of high-heat cooking

Instructions

  • Heat the milk and sugar on low heat, stirring so that sugar dissolves. Do not bring the milk to boil and make sure it doesn't stick to the pan.
  • Once the milk cools down, add the eggs
  • Beat the egg and milk mixture until the eggs are completely mixed with the milk and it's slightly frothy.
  • Heat the skillet or a pan on a low-to-medium high heat (I like using cast iron pan but you might want to non-stick pan if you are not used to cast iron).
  • Once the skillet is hot, coat the surface of the pan with oil. You want to use enough oil about 1-2 tsp for each slice to get a creamy texture.
  • Dip the bread slice in the milk and egg mixture. Make sure the whole surface of the bread slice is covered but don't leave it in mix for too long as the bread slice will break.
  • Put the bread on the skillet and once it's lightly brown on one side, flip it on the other side. Sauté until both sides are lightly browned.
  • You can make multiple slices at the same time depending on the size of your skillet.
  • After making the first slice, I will test to see if it needs more. I will sometimes add in more sugar if needed but sometimes, I will sprinkle caster sugar, honey or maple syrup before serving. But you can also make it without the sugar in the milk and sprinkle sugar afterwards. Though I prefer mixing sugar in the milk rather than sprinkling it afterwards
  • Serve hot with your favourite fruits and mascarpone cheese. But I also eat it with a hot cup of chai without fruits or cheese!

Notes

You can slice off the edges from the bread but I personally like the brown edges.
PS: And I don't know why it's called French toast! Sorry!
